You have probably heard about birth affirmations before but maybe you want to learn more not that you have learned of your own pregnancy. Birth affirmations are an amazing tool for both birthing individuals and their support people to learn about. Today, we will dive deeply into the amazing world of birth affirmations and help you prepare some ideas for your labor.
What are birth affirmations?
Birth affirmations are phrases or mantras you can repeat to yourself during labor and delivery. They can help you keep focused on your breath, maintain a positive mood, and build confidence for a more empowering birth. Your birth team can all help remind you of birth affirmations you have chosen prenatally during labor and delivery.
Birth Affirmations Examples
Anything can be a birth affirmation if it is affirming and calming to the birthing person. However, many birth affirmations center around reminding women of the strength of their bodies, their intuition and capability, managing contractions, and how they will soon meet their babies. You can make your own birth affirmations but here are some popular variations.
My body knows exactly what to do.
Each surge brings me closer to my baby.
I can do anything for 60 seconds.
I will breath my baby down.
I will trust this process. I trust my body and my baby.
I am a badass. I can do this.
I feel safe. I feel secure. I feel confident.
I soften. I open. I release.
I am prepared for any path my birth takes.
My uterus is strong. It radiates its strength with each surge.
Soon I will meet my baby. My body is bringing my baby to me.
This pain is powerful but I am more powerful. I can handle it.
Love is all around me.
Women around the world are laboring with me.
My body is a flower, opening with new life.
How Doulas can Use Birth Affirmations In the Birth Space
As a birth doula, I love finding new ways to integrate affirmations into the birth space. Many people use affirmations naturally to help themselves relax, concentrate, and get through the pain of childbirth. However, there are many fun ways to integrate affirmations in labor other than just repeating them to your client. I love to give my clients a deck of birth affirmations at our last prenatal meeting. I ask them to pick out the top ten that resonate with them. I can then tape these up in their birth space during labor.
Alternatively, they can find birth affirmation coloring books or pages and color these prenatally. These can also be added to the birth space. Some people even make or find pre-recorded tracks with birth affirmations and soothing music. Whatever works for you and will help you feel relaxed and calm is a great idea to pursue when it comes to positive birth affirmations.
